Chocolate Printer Means No More Midnight Trips to the Grocery Store

By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer

Life would be so much easier if we could just print out the things that we need. The ability to print hundred dollar bills in a home office, for example, would solve so many problems. While people can’t fire up their inkjets and crank out legal tender, they can now use a printer that makes 3D chocolate designs. They’re edible, they’re delicious and they’re as creative as you want them to be.

Choc Edge has made the Choc Creator Version 1 3D chocolate printer available to anyone for $4,600. Customers must fill an interior syringe with chocolate and the printer creates a pre-programmed confection. Syringes can be switched out so users can print en masse, or so they can layer different types of chocolate into their design.

The 3D design files are transferred from the computer to the printer via USB cable. A stepper motor three-dimensionally prints multiple layers of chocolate by squeezing it through the syringe.

3D printing is nothing new. Many 3D printers create items out of plastic, and they’re sometimes used to pirate or bootleg a variety of objects. But before you try to print out a 3D copy of that hard-to-find vintage Boba Fett doll, you should know the printers are not sophisticated enough to create items of a complex design. Thank goodness chocolate is so deliciously simple.

Time reported last year that scientists from the University of Exeter had created the world’s first commercial chocolate printer. “What makes this technology special is that users will be able to design and make their own products,” said project leader Dr. Liang Hao. “In the long term it could be developed to help consumers custom-design many products from different materials, but we’ve started with chocolate as it is readily available, low cost and non-hazardous. There is also no waste, as any unused or spoiled material can be eaten, of course!”

While Choc Edge’s printer is not the first on the market, it is the first being marketed to everyday chocolate lovers. The first 90 people to preorder the unit will receive a discount of around $500. Plus, as long as the substance can flow out of the syringe, users can print with the Choc Creator.

The Choc Creator can create a chocolate sculpture at any time of the day or night. Now, about that cash printer….
