AT&T Extends Talks with Communication Workers of America

AT&T (News - Alert) and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) agreed to continue negotiating a contract renewal for the East and Legacy T Core Wireline divisions. The contracts affect about 9,000 AT&T employees located around the U.S.



The Legacy T contract encompasses about 6,000 employees around the country while the East contract affects about 3,000 workers in Connecticut. The contracts expired at 11:59 Eastern on April 7.

The CWA and AT&T did not come to an agreement on a contract extension, however, both parties agreed to continue the renegotiating process. AT&T points out its bond with the CWA (News - Alert) is strong.

The wireless and broadband provider also stated in a press release it continues contract extension talks with two other divisions in the Midwest and West regions. These contracts are set to expire at 11:59 Central and 11:59 Pacific, respectively. The Midwest regional contract covers more than 17,000 AT&T employees.

Employees in the effected regions will report to work as normal under to the terms of the expired contract. The CWA reports that if a fair agreement is not reached with the telecommunications company, the union would strike. The motion to strike if an agreement can’t be made passed by a 93 percent vote.

Mark Royse, executive VP of Labor Relations, commented on the situation at the AT&T website, saying “As one of the largest employers in America, we're proud of the number of quality middle class careers we've provided to our employees, with wages and benefits that are among the best in the country. We have a longstanding cooperative relationship with our unions, and we're committed to working together to bargain a fair contract that will allow us to protect those careers.”
