Facebook Thinning, Developers Gradually Assuming the Google Lifestyle

By Miguel Leiva-Gomez, TMCnet Contributor

We all gravitate to where the grass is greener and the tech is sweeter, and developers are no exception. According to a study, new surges of developers want to work with Google (News - Alert)+, its own social network, and other products the search engine giant offers.

Facebook’s developer base also seems to be thinning. Could this put a halt to Facebook's (News - Alert) growth?

According to a report from International Data Corporation and Appcelerator, developers are flocking to Google products like Google+, Gmail and Android (News - Alert) – each with an agenda in mind.

We might actually see a future where people wear clothes made by Google. Then again, they already have a pair of sunglasses on the way!

"Google is learning some good lessons from Facebook about what not to do and what to do better,” said Michael King, Appcelerator's principal analyst. “We didn't expect Google to do so well against Facebook, but it puts them at an advantage. Many developers now see Google as offering more opportunities for growth than Facebook."

The survey itself was conducted with 2,173 participating developers worldwide. Its results show 39 percent of participants would take Google over Facebook's social graph because of how its strategy aligns with their needs and goals. The survey also concluded that many developers weren’t as interested in working on Android's platform as they did on iOS due to "platform fragmentation."

The survey also predicts HTML5 will have a bigger impact on the mobile market in the rest of 2012, mostly because a large 79 percent of mobile developers will pursue HTML5 in the future.
