WhitePages Teases Social Caller ID App

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

WhitePages is preparing to release a new mobile application aimed at integrating social networking elements into mobile phones caller IDs.

The pending Social Caller ID app was teased earlier this month at the World Mobile Congress in Spain, alongside two other redesigned applications for Android's (News - Alert) latest mobile operating system – codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

Set to launch later this spring, Social Caller ID will give users a trove of information about incoming callers beyond their names and numbers. When a call comes through, users will be greeted with all the latest social networking updates from the caller, including posts to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn (News - Alert) and even Foursquare, according to a hands-on preview from IT World.

Users are even given weather and news updates from the city where the call originated to provide a conversation piece.

The app also examines call history and text history, and creates info-graphics and data about one’s relationship with another user. It then provides information on call availability, or the best time to call another user based on call history.

When unknown callers dial in, the app will automatically search WhitePages' database to provide enough information for users to accept or reject them. Social Caller ID also has a spam filter to detect telemarketers.

TMC (News - Alert) recently sat down with WhitePages CEO Alex Algard at ITEXPO East 2012 to talk about the company and where it is headed next. Algard previews one of the company's new offerings, WhitePages Pro – an enterprise-focused API providing businesses with a 360-degree view of the caller. Check out the video after the jump.

Social Caller ID is currently expected to launch exclusively on the Android Market.

"We are excited to be among the first developers to take advantage of the advanced user interface and functionality that Ice Cream Sandwich provides," Bill Brooks, Director of Mobile Products and Business Development at WhitePages, said in a statement prior to the conference. "We have always been strong believers in the Android platform and look forward to the rapid adoption of our apps as more consumers are introduced to the benefits of this new operating system."

We'll let you know when the app hits the market.
