Mobile News Consumption in the U.S. 2012

By Julie Griffin, Contributing Writer

The 2012 State of the News Media Report answers many of the questions news wires have about the relationship between mobile devices and news media. Studies show that 27 percent of Americans read their news through their mobile devices, but those using tablets read longer and stay on news sites longer than those on mobile phones.

Mobile readers are also likely to attend traditional sources for their news, such as BBC and The New York Times, but revenue from ads and subscriptions on those sites has declined by 7.3%.

The study, conducted by Pew (News - Alert) Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, illustrates how conventional news sources are not capitalizing on opportunities to increase revenue like technology companies do.

Media critic Jeff Jarvis tells the Associate Press that traditional news organizations could be a little more creative with their Web sources and apps, follow techies’ example and throw in more links.

Said Jarvis: "I fear the iPad is a siren call to news organizations, seducing them into thinking they can maintain their old models and old controls, not just maintain but regain them.”

Other media experts consent there is ample room for improvement, and that it should be a priority since digital sources can accurately read the reader to better market to them.

Social media like Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter are venues often used to simply relay news, but only 9 percent of people polled said they actually read the news they heard that way. The Associated Press (News - Alert), The Washington Post and ABC News have all made efforts to adjust to the needs of their tablet readers by developing apps and appointing companies like Yahoo and YouTube (News - Alert) to air their news through video streaming.
