Apple Distributing Second Wave of iPads on March 23

By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer

After Apple’s (News - Alert) March 16 release in the U.S. and nine other countries, the new iPad will roll out to 25 other countries beginning March 23. The new version will have a sharper Retina display and a faster quad-core processing chip.

Demand for the new iPad has caused Apple to sell through its initial stock, and online orders may not be available for some time. Anyone who has not pre-ordered and wants a new iPad will therefore have to join the throngs outside of their local Apple store, which will be opening at 8 a.m. local time. Enthusiasts can also purchase the new iPad at AT&T and Verizon stores as well as at Best Buy (News - Alert), Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Target and Wal-Mart.

The new 16 GB iPad features traditional Wi-Fi. Those interested in 4G LTE will see it retail for $629 for 16 GB. Data plans will be charged on a month-to-month basis, with AT&T (News - Alert) offering 250 MB for $15 and Verizon offering 2 GB for $30. Customers will not have to sign a contract to get data for their new iPads.

The new tablet, retailing for $499, will have 4G capability. Countries getting the tablet this Friday include the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as well as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The following countries will receive the product on March 23: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

A Samsung (News - Alert) employee recently claimed that Apple was also pursuing a plan to create a 7-inch mini version of the iPad. Apple, of course, had no comment.
