Yandex, Russia’s leading search engine, announced Tuesday a partnership agreement with Twitter (News - Alert) to integrate all public tweets into its search results.
The deal will give it full access to all tweets except for private ones, according to New York-listed Yandex in a statement to the Associated Press.
The microblogging service says tweets of over two million users are available for search on Yandex and became visible to users Tuesday.
Users who tweet in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian or Kazakh, as well as top feeds in any other language, will be included in Yandex’s Blog Search results.
Yandex advises that its search for Twitter feeds is just like any other search engine meaning it is word-form sensitive and corrects typos. In order to search for the tweets, the system’s users can search by username or by hashtag.
“With more than 250 million tweets a day, Twitter is a valuable information source and the fastest way to find out what’s happening in your world,” said April Underwood, Twitter director of business development. “Through this partnership, Yandex and Twitter will work together to make it easier for Yandex users in Russia and elsewhere to find real-time content about the people and things they care about most.”
The partnership with Twitter is part of the movement Yandex has been recently making towards social networking.
On Monday, the company announced its social networking search program in an effort to enhance their search engine’s quality.
According to the company, Yandex web users in Russia can now view all public profiles of a person with accounts on the country’s most popular social networking and blogging websites, such as VKontakte, Facebook (News - Alert), LiveJournal and Odnoklassniki.
“We are currently concentrating on social networking search. This partnership with Twitter reinforces our effort in this area,” said Anton Pavlov, Yandex’s Blog Search manager. “People share news, exchange opinions and discuss all sorts of matter in real time all the time. This kind of information will help us enhance our search results.”
Yandex is currently Russia’s largest search engine with 63 percent of the country’s users while Google (News
- Alert) only boasts 23 percent, as reported by the Associated Press.
In addition, the company announced today its fourth quarter results reporting revenue of $200 million, up 56 percent from last year.
