Digium Extends Its Reach into VoIP for Business Productivity with Latest Asterisk Release

By Kerry Doyle, Contributing Writer

With global, 24/7 connectivity becoming a business requirement, IP phones are gaining in popularity. Traditional PBX (News - Alert)-based systems, or land lines, that have been the standard are now increasingly limited in the digital age. They lack the flexibility and bandwidth necessary to ensure that an organization succeeds on all fronts: interoffice messaging, mobile connectivity, and immediate customer service support, to name a few. Now Digium (News - Alert), maker of the Asterisk IP phone, has taken the best of PBX systems and combined it with its open source VoIP gateway, Switchvox (News - Alert), to power today’s business communications.

The ability to create highly customized solutions for the IP phone market has been a hallmark of Digium from the beginning. The new phones include a highly touted app engine that uses JavaScript API to interface with core phone features. Digium's IP phones represent a less costly option for customers as well as one that more easily integrates with Switchvox and other Asterisk (News - Alert)-based PBX systems.

According to Danny Windham, president and CEO of Digium, “These phones are absolutely the easiest to install, integrate, provision and use with both Asterisk and Switchvox. And best of all, we’ve done all of this at a very competitive price point, providing our customers with the best value in business phone systems.”

Due to a variety of factors, the hosted VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) market continues to show steady growth in the U.S. As the technology continues to mature, businesses are increasingly drawn to hosted VoIP as a highly efficient and affordable turnkey telephony solution. Digium has increased the power and diversity of IP phone implementation. For example, some of the new capabilities which diverge dramatically from standard PBX-style phones include: presence management; searchable contact directory; queue monitoring, recording and voicemail control, all at the user’s fingertips.

In today’s increasingly technology-driven economy, dynamic connectivity, in all its variations, has already become the main characteristic of a successful organization. Every company’s unique structure requires a versatile and media-rich connectivity solution that will enable it to flourish. Digium’s latest entry into the VoIP market represents complete system integration for its own proprietary products tightly integrated with Switchvox.
