The Year Ahead - with ip.access's Andy Tiller

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

TMCnet recently asked some of the leading lights in the industry for their thoughts about 2011 and what’s in store for the year ahead.

Here’s what Andy Tiller, senior vice president of product strategy and marketing at ip.access, had to say.

The company, which is backed by Cisco (News - Alert), Intel Capital and Qualcomm, says it has installed more in-building cells than any other vendor, and that its technology is used by more than 60 mobile operators around the world.

What was your company’s greatest achievement in 2011?

Tiller: Reaching the milestone of more than 500,000 ip.access 3G small cells deployed.

What are your business’s goals for 2012?

Tiller: To expand the number of networks deploying ip.access small cells and achieve more than 1 million ip.access small cells deployed.  We also aim to complete the development of our first LTE (News - Alert) small cell products.

How would you describe your outlook for business and the economy at large heading into 2012?

Tiller: ip.access is at the heart of a fundamental shift in the way that networks are deployed to deal with the massive explosion in mobile data traffic.  A recent report predicted a 3000 percent rise in small-cell deployments, so we see a lot of growth in our sector of the mobile infrastructure market.

If there’s one thing you’d like to see happen related to business in the year ahead, what is that one thing?

Tiller: It’s that mobile operators will continue to make substantial investments in small cells for their future mobile broadband networks.

If 2011 was the year of cloud and/or the year of the tablet, 2012 will be the year of …

Tiller: the small cell as the structure of the mobile network starts to shift.
