Qumu Solution Enables Holistic Enterprise Video Distribution, Delivery

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, IP Communications Magazines

The bring-your-own-device trend combined with renewed interest in video communications and a desire by many organizations to decrease travel expenditures are all contributing to a need for more efficient and accessible enterprise video distribution and delivery solutions. Qumu has responded to that need with a platform that can ingest, store and distribute video to any endpoint, says Todd Porter, vice president of product innovation and marketing.

The company was founded by former executives of Inktomi, who acquired the Media technology from Inktomi prior to its acquisition by Yahoo! Inc., which retains a minority equity interest in Qumu.

The Qumu solution does intelligent routing of video to find the best path on which to deliver on-demand video. The system, which is used by clients with offices around the world, includes permissioning so an administrator can see who is logging in and what they watched. It also enables audience members to ask questions and presenters to leverage split screens, if desired, for live broadcasts. The solution is provided as a software solution or in an appliance form factor, and it can work within cloud environments.

The product is aimed at companies that seek to broadcast training or other messaging to hundreds of end users. Qumu is particularly popular in the banking, insurance and retail sectors. Customers include such big names as Dow, JPMorganChase and Safeway.

Qumu recently released version 6.0 of its platform, which Porter says addresses mobility, intelligent routing and SharePoint integration. He adds that this release also positions the product to be more of a holistic platform.

As discussed in a recent TMCnet posting, components of the platform include Video Control Center 6.0, which allows administrators to acquire video from any source, create and manage a centralized video library and minimize the impact of video traffic on networking infrastructure; Product VideoNet 2.0, which distributes and tracks streamed video and related content from a centralized source to any size audience over multiple Qumu VideoNet Edge routes, and internal or external content distribution networks; and an updated SDK as well as a specific mobile SDK.

Going forward, Porter tells TMC (News - Alert), expect more solutions from Qumu that address mobility. The company does adaptive streaming today, and plans to add adaptive ceiling technology in the near future, he says. Also, throughout the year Qumu expects to add support for other popular mobile operating systems including BlackBerry and Windows Mobile; it supports Android (News - Alert) and iOS today.
