Openwave Helps Carriers Address Mobile Data Deluge
Helping customers better understand and manage their mobile data usage, and using optimization to lessen congestion and ensure a high quality user experience, are two of the biggest trends happening in communications today. Openwave Systems Inc. addresses both of the above with its solutions, which are in use by more than 70 mobile network operators globally, says Indranil Chatterjee, vice president of product management.
Openwave (News - Alert) Smart Policy, which is part of Openwave Passport, allows mobile service providers to track per-user activity by bandwidth usage or minutes on the network. That way, service providers can alert customers if they’re nearing the ceilings of their current plans.
Also included under the Passport Smart Policy is the Price Plan Innovation Solution, which has to do with up-selling and cross-selling new data service plans to end users, Chatterjee explains. This solution includes a meter gauge on the toolbar so users can do self-care management. That way users know when they’re getting close to their service plan limits. The solution also offers a dynamic interface so if the subscriber visits a certain site, like CNN, the service provider can offer a special deal on accessing that content.
The Smart Policy solution, including the PPIS, are currently in use at du, an integrated telecom service provider in the United Arab Emirates.

The company’s Traffic Mediation solution pairs Media Optimizer with Openwave Smart Policy so carriers can define subscriber level, time-of-day-based, or volume-based policies that influence the optimization decision.
Yet another offer from Openwave is Amplicity, an HTML 5-based ecosystem monetization solution that helps operators leverage the value of their networks to improve the way content is distributed and monetized on the mobile web.
