Google's Photovine Unearthed

By David Vaughan, Director of Projects, TSG Global
Google (News - Alert) is just on fire this month as yet another (sorta) release has happened hot on the heels of Google+.  Google+ being old news, (geez only two weeks and it's old news?) Google plants yet another social seed with Photovine.  However, it seems these seeds have yet to sprout as disappointed first adopters were met with a dry three page teaser showcasing what is yet to cultivate.

First reported by Business Insider to be live, photovine.com is allowing potential newcomers to complete an invitation as well as watch a video from Google on how they think this will be the next big thing.

Little has been confirmed from Google with no public announcements or tweets about the new service, but the search giant has applied for a trademark over the Photovine name on June 7, 2011, as well as the photovine.com domain name is registered in the name of Google Inc.

An excerpt from the Photovine Facebook (News - Alert) page states, "Photovine is a community that's about creating fun and unique collections of photos that we call Vines."

Now, I'm sure this will be integrated with the newly launched Google+, and Google itself does not seem to be marketing this as a standalone product.  Even on the website it displays an iPhone (News - Alert) instead of Android-based phone, but Google already owns Picasa, so to have two separate services will certainly offer nothing but confusion to end users.

As stated, Photovine is currently invitation only; you can request an invitation here.
