Google Updates Android Market, Gives App Recommendations

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

One of the biggest complaints amongst Android app developers is that users have a difficult time finding apps on the Android Market compared to iTunes. This week, Google (News - Alert) took a step to remedy that, and it’s kind of a big deal.

The new look Android Market brings several new features including new app charts to editor selected applications. With the new “Top App” charts feature is not only faster, but now country-specific so users can filter out what they’re looking at based on their location, giving the most relevant results.

The new market also features an Editors' Choice badge for apps that the Market staff will select, a Top Developers list, a section for trending apps, and "Users also viewed" and "Users also installed" sections for each app on the Market. The phone and tablet versions of the Market will be getting most of these changes “soon,” Google says.

In addition, the company is adding Top New Free and Top New Paid (News - Alert) apps to highlight apps launched within the past 30 days that have been doing well. Google is adding a new “trending” section that showcases apps that are getting a lot of downloads in a short period of time.

Google officials said the company will keep a close eye on the quality of apps on the trending list and other new categories to make sure that it isn’t filled with apps that have found a way to game the system.

The refresh is pitched as an attempt to make app discovery far easier for consumers, helping installations move swiftly on from the 4.5 billion registered to date.

Each app page on Android (News - Alert) Market now features 'related apps' – i.e. either those browsed by users who installed the app in question, or those that tend to be installed alongside.

"Whether you’re looking for the most popular apps, hot new apps, or just the very best apps available, we want to help make sure that you find what you're looking for," said Android Market product manager Fernando Delgado.

The redesign forms one part of a whole host of changes to Google's Android business, announced during the firm's I/O conference in San Francisco. The new Web version is available right now, with the update to the Android Market client on handsets arriving in the not so distant future.
