Report: Web-To-TV Revolution on Horizon

In-Stat, an IT market research company, announced the results from its latest report, “Web-To-TV Changes Everything,”

The company predicts that Web-to-TV streaming services will grow to $2.9 billion in 2013 and that currently more than 40 percent of young adults in U.S. households view Internet live streamed video, or downloaded video, on their television sets at last once a month.

Keith Nissen, Analyst and author of the report said, “Once Web-to-TV video becomes simple and convenient, mass consumer adoption will follow quite rapidly.”

The firm also found that the number of U.S. broadband households viewing Web-to-TV content will reach 24 million by 2104. Presently 25-to-34-year-olds that have access to game consoles, interface the devices between PC’s and TV’s in order to watch streaming video off the Internet. The estimated number of U.S. broadband households that will use media center PCs for streaming Web-to-TV content by 2014 is 7.4 million.

Another popular way of watching Web-based video content on a conventional TV is to interface the home computer with it by using Media Extenders such as from NETGEAR that are called Digital ME’s, and the PC-on-TV Media Player from D-Link.

Some companies have even introduced Internet connectable TV’s such as LG Electronics’ Plasma Broadband High Definition TV, as reported by TMCnet, that showcase the company’s NetCast Entertainment Access, which bring to the viewer a wide range of Net features and almost instant streaming (a 30 to 40 seconds delay) of videos available on Yahoo, Netflix and YouTube (News - Alert) by virtue of LG’s recent tie-ups and agreements with these companies.

A different way of watching TV is to watch broadcasts as per convenience on the computer. An earlier TMCnet article reported that Internet TV watching is on the rise – so that the number U.S. households who use the Web to watch TV broadcasts increased 100 percent from 2006 to 2008.
