MUSC Medical Center Picks Internet Fax Service MyFax
By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center has announced it is using Internet fax service from MyFax.
MUSC receives 50,000 faxed pages per month and sends another 10,000. The Medical Center was quite dissatisfied by the cost issues and logistics problems associated with their faxing volume. After conducting a full cost analysis based on current fax volume and anticipated future growth, they decided to pick MyFax (News - Alert) to solve their problems.
While the healthcare industry typically prefers using fax to transmit sensitive information, they must also ensure the security and privacy of information.
Sujit Kar, IT manager for business development and marketing services at MUSC, said he didn’t want to get into managing fax servers, and was searching for an outsourced solution. They were also looking to get some help with development, and once it was running, wanted all the technical management to be handled for them.
MUSC evaluated their options and decided on MyFax. The solution initially served the inbound fax needs of 700 users and as a result, the Medical Center experienced a decrease in potential HIPAA violations.
The faxes received by MUSC are now tagged with medical record numbers. A unique software then ensures that these faxes are automatically routed to the right department. This software also scans the cover sheets and determines where they should go, regardless of the fax number it was sent to originally.
The Medical Center has also experienced a decrease in the paper consumption, and is now also saving energy once needed to power all the old fax machines.
“Anyone who uses MyFax is hooked on it,” Kar said. “And the support we’ve received from the company has been beyond excellent. I wish all enterprise-level tools worked this smoothly and were supported this well.”
Last month, MyFax announced a number of new features and functionalities like the ability to save commonly faxed documents within MyFax Central, the service’s Web-interface. Now, when a fax is sent, it is also possible to automatically add contacts to the Contact Book, a feature similar to many email programs.
