Tata Communications Completes GSMA IP eXchange Trial

Tata Communications, a global provider of communication technologies, said it has successfully completed trials of its wireless IP interconnection technology and verified that its IP eXchange framework can interconnect wireless networks over IP.

The IP eXchange trial was conducted as part of the international Global System for Mobile Communications Association's (GSMA (News - Alert)) IP eXchange (IPX) Pre-Commercial Implementation Project to develop the next generation of wireless services. The project verifies the design and operation of IPX networks through a series of trials designed to validate technical and commercial specifications.

In the trial, Tata Communications (News - Alert) partnered with TELUS, a Canadian telecommunications provider, and Telekom Austria, to interconnect voice services using different signaling and transmission standards.

Once adopted, IPX will act as a private global IP backbone, open to any telecommunications company adhering to the required standards, Tata Communications said. IPX will provide fixed and mobile service providers with a technical and commercial platform for the performance-based exchange of IP-based services.

“Tata Communications' participation and completion of the GSMA's IPX trial is key to our strategy of delivering innovative voice solutions to our customers worldwide,” said Michel Guyot (News - Alert), president, Global Voice Solutions for Tata Communications.

The trial demonstrated the flexibility of Tata Communications' newly deployed next generation network (NGN) by bridging voice over IP services using several very different standards, Tata Communications said. The trial also proves that Tata Communications can commercialize IPX Voice Services.

With the growth of IP communications, the IPX model is crucial for service providers such as Tata Communications to offer effective connectivity and significant expertise in handling and servicing service providers.

Tata Communications is planning to launch its own IPX rich, integrated offering to service providers - like TELUS (News - Alert) and Telekom Austria - delivered over next-generation network architecture, Guyot further said.

“TELUS is committed to delivering the best possible service experience for our clients,” said Brent Allison, vice-president of TELUS Partner Solutions, in a statement. “These IPX standards give us a new technical and commercial model for the migration of voice traffic to converged IP networks. We were pleased to play a key role with a valued partner like Tata Communications in this industry-leading IP initiative.”
