Motorola to Aid China Telecom in CDMA Network Upgrade
By Jessica Kostek, TMCnet Channel Editor
China is about to get a massive upgrade from Motorola (News - Alert). The company has been awarded by China Telecommunications Corporation, a telecom operator, a CDMA network upgrade project.
As part of the agreement, Motorola would provide CDMA radio access infrastructure for 42 cities in nine provinces across the country. China Telecom (News - Alert) would also get access to the latest versions of Motorola’s CDMA2000 1X and next-generation CDMA equipment at thousands of cell sites.
Officials say that the installation of this new equipment will expand the coverage area and replace older generation 1X equipment in markets where the Motorola network has been operating for years.
The equipment is likely to be installed in early 2009, and the project itself is part of a larger effort to upgrade China Telecom’s nationwide CDMA network to next-generation capability.
“China is a major market for Motorola,” said Ruey-Bin Kao, president of Motorola China. “The deployment of next generation CDMA technology for China Telecom is another milestone in Motorola’s long history of supporting major telecom operators in China.”
Kao said that Motorola has a significant install base of CDMA 1X equipment that will be expanded and upgraded reinforcing the company’s position as a leading wireless infrastructure supplier in China.
Motorola’s official said that the company launched its first CDMA network in 1995 and now is a major supplier of CDMA 1X and EV-DO Revision A solution to tier one operators in the United States, Japan, and China and with operators in other countries around the world.
The officials said that Motorola’s CDMA portfolio supports legacy systems as well as 3G technologies including EV-DO Rev. A and includes solutions such as highly scalable EV-DO Base Site Controller (BSC) platform and Push-to-Talk over Cellular solution.
Motorola continues to advance its wireless networks to support 4G systems.
Meanwhile, Motorola has also announced that it signed an agreement with MTN (News - Alert) Uganda to improve network performance.
As part of that three-year, multi-million dollar network optimization services contract Motorola would help the mobile operator to improve voice, data and roaming experience for its subscribers.
