- GRIC Communications, Inc. announced that John
"Joc" Jacquay has joined the company as president and chief operating
officer from an executive position at MCI, and will become a member of the board of
directors. He will report directly to Dr. Hong Chen, chairman and CEO of the company.
Prior
to joining GRIC, Jacquay formed the Regulated Industries Unit for MCI Systemhouse and
served as chief operating executive. During this period, the unit developed and
implemented the Local Number Portability solution used by MCI and other carriers in an
intelligent service bureau format. Established in 12 countries, the unit provides global
systems integration and outsourcing services to the telecommunications and utilities
industries.
- PIKA, a market leader in voice cards, has hired Maarten Kronenburg as
Commercial Manager European Union to direct the PIKA expansion in Europe. Kronenburg will
firm up the already existing customer base, and expand the PIKA presence in the Western

- Nuance Communications, a leading provider of speech
recognition technology for V-Commerce and
communications transactions, announced the appointment of Christian Dugast,
Ph.D. to the position of Director of European Operations. In his new capacity, Dugast will
be in charge of developing and growing Nuance's presence in Europe. The company also
announced plans to open a continental European subsidiary in early 1999
with headquarters in Paris, France.
Dugast comes to Nuance with over ten years of experience in research, development and
marketing of speech recognition technology. He was formerly a product manager, and then
innovation manager for the SpeechMania business unit within Philips Speech Processing, a
division of Philips Electronics NV. During his tenure with Philips Speech Processing, he
was responsible for bringing telephony-based natural language speech recognition
technology to market and is widely credited with helping to spur the adoption of
speech-enabled interactive voice response (IVR) technology in Europe.
- NetSpeak Corporation announced that John
C. Mitchell will join the company as Chief Architect. Previously Manager of
Multimedia Architecture and Platforms, Enterprise Communications Systems at Lucent
Technologies, Mr. Mitchell will direct all technical product strategy planning,
development and management activities.
In his previous role at Lucent Technologies, Mr. Mitchell was responsible for identifying,
specifying and prototyping new enterprise communications products and capabilities. Most
notably, Mitchell directed the proof-of-concept development for Lucent's ISDN and IP
real-time communications systems, now employed in Lucent's Multipoint Conferencing Unit
(MCU) and H.323 products. He also oversaw the definition and evaluation of technology for
SS7 call routing for enterprise applications.
- IDRC (International Data Response Corporation), a
telemarketing and customer service outsourcing firm, has made two strategic appointments
to its business development team. IDRC recently appointed Tim Ferguson
and Mitch Pepper as Business Development Managers for ProMark One, an
IDRC subsidiary within the IDRC USA Outbound division. In his new role as Business
Development Manager, Ferguson will be responsible for new account development and
maintenance primarily within the financial services industry. Pepper will be responsible
for new business development and maintenance, concentrating primarily on public utilities
and membership services.
- CosmoCom, Inc., a leading developer of virtual
call center technology, today announced the appointment of Terri Ghio as
Vice President of Sales, Gregory Vacchiano as East Coast Regional
Sales Director, and Tom Schutz as West Coast Regional Sales Director.
