Motorola: Our New Gateway Combines High-Speed Wireless and Security

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Seeking to offer high-speed wireless access and security in one device, Motorola (News - Alert) today announced a new full-featured wireless gateway for home networkers and small businesses.

According to Motorola, the gateway offers twice the reach of wireless gateways available off-the-shelf at retail stores.

For advanced residential or small business consumers seeking high-speed voice, video, and data services, the gateway provides features such as: single unit convenience, where an integrated four-port Ethernet router, company officials say, and an 802.11g/b wireless access point is provided for networking flexibility; range and performance, where twice the Wi-Fi reach of a normal wireless gateway (400mW) is provided with 3D Reach Extreme; the convenience of a single button pairing via Wi-Fi Protected Setup; advanced security with LAN and WAN wireless networking and security utilities, including WEP encryption, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), WPA-PSK, 802.11i/WPA2; remote management with support for TR-069 extensions for remote provisioning, management and diagnosis; power savings, as the gateway helps conserve battery life on laptops and other peripherals when they are in Wi-Fi mode; and flexibility with support for Macintosh and PC.

Improved by Motorola’s device management platform, the gateway is designed for high-quality service levels, company officials say. With Motorola’s NBBS, operators can remotely access, configure, monitor and troubleshoot the full portfolio of consumer devices, home networks and services, company officials say.

As the gateway supports a multi-user environment, it’s designed to serve as an ideal wireless gateway for a gigabit-capable passive optical network, Motorola says. Users can get a robust and secure home networking experience by connecting their existing cable modem, DSL gateway, or PON broadband connection, company officials say. To get the best flexibility in networking options, households can use up to four of the gateway’s 10/100 Ethernet ports or its 802.11g/b access point, according to the company.

“As next-generation passive optical networks are deployed, the gateway device delivers advanced home networking capabilities and remote troubleshooting that helps reduce costs for operators and service providers.” said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager, Broadband Solutions Group, Motorola, Inc. “This is yet another example of how Motorola enables operators to deliver personalized, rich media experiences to their customers.”

The Motorola Netopia (News - Alert) four-port ethernet high-performance wireless gateway will be available in the second half this year. The company is showing it at NXTcomm, the trade show being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center this week.
