Backspace to Intro IPTV Mobile Solution at NXTComm

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

A San Luis Obispo, California-based Internet protocol T Vcompany announced today that it’s unveiling new mobile solutions at a popular telecom show this week in Las Vegas.

At NCTcomm08, Backspace Communications LLC, which officials describe as an early developer of IPTV broadcasting solutions, will demonstrate its new streaming mobile TV capability, according to the company.

Backspace Chief Executive Officer Fling Traylor says the new solution will represent an ideal tool for small communications providers.

“As large players expand their reach to niche markets, local ISPs are struggling to find ways to retain and add to their customer base,” Traylor said. “The ability to offer content to subscribers on three screens – computer, television, and mobile device – all at a reasonable price, is a huge differentiator.”

Traylor and company Chief Technical Officer Joseph Lea founded Backspace in 2000 by merging the technology and assets of an ISP and a local television station. The company now offers IPTV (News - Alert) services to subscribers and equipment and consulting services for broadcasters

Traylor and others in the industry believe that the market for mobile IPTV is fertile.

According to market research firm Infonetics, sales of video-capable mobile devices will reach nearly $125 million in 2010, and there will be nearly 60 million users of mobile video at that time.

Backspace officials say their mobile solution is designed to help carriers take advantage of the projected growth. In addition to mobile video capability, Backspace officials say the company offers a full suite of IPTV broadcasting products and a wide range of consulting services to help prospective IPTV operators design and deploy their content.

“While there are other solutions out there that allow users to view video on their mobile device, a large percentage of them allow only video-on-demand services,” Backspace officials say. “The solution from Backspace Communications, LLC, however, allows users to watch the same content and programming as they can see on their television set, live television in addition to VoD.”
