UDC Helping Shape the Future of Mobility

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

IP communications solutions provider UniData Communications (UDC) is changing the Wi-Fi mobility experience with a pair of high quality IP handsets launching at next week’s NXTcomm (News - Alert) 08 in Las Vegas

The Korean-based outfit is helping shape the future trends of Wi-Fi, in part due to the unlicensed mobility of Wi-Fi, as its new products enable users to have a cost effective communication service through broadband without license cost, as well as a much higher data transmission speed. The traditional PSTN is not able to compare with it, said Matthew Park, the Seoul-based company’s marketing director.

“It enables us to have more rich communication service with low cost and higher speed data transmission. This is the initiation our Wi-Fi based handset development,” said Park.

In fact, UDC has been working with just a few select carrier partners since they opened shop in 1997, when they first saw the market potential for fixed telephone company’s new opportunity.

As Wi-Fi continues to evolve, and the platform extends, complications have arisen for business and service providers.

However, with UDC’s Wi-Fi phones – the WPU-7700 Wi-Fi phone and WPU-8800 video phone – UDC has a general Wi-Fi solution platform that enables flexibility for every different carrier and business requirements. “That is the unique competitive with competitors,” says Park.

“Because the competitors are having proprietary protocol that can’t cooperate easily variable customer requirements. For example, UDC has been solving lots of problem like security, interoperability and roaming at enterprise environment. UDC solves those types of problems under field correction base for our customers, such as Hitachi (News - Alert) Cable in Japan and LG Dacom in Korea so far,” he said.

“Our Wi-Fi phone has been developed with 10 years experience and know-how,” said Park. “This is the differentiation with other manufacturers, as they have made their Wi-Fi phones with third party Wi-Fi solution package.”

However, Wi-Fi standards are still developing, which is not the case with PSTN. “In this situation, our Wi-Fi expertise could have provided faster customization and stability for service providers needs.”

In competition with PSTN market dominated by governments, or few companies, Internet phone enables the latest service providers to have more flexible opportunities to start local, long and international call service using internet which is widely spread to every home and enterprise. However, wired Internet phones must be located in a specific area which is able to be connected with LAN port for the internet connection. This can be an obstacle for general service deployment, because of absence of mobility.

“UD Internet phone using Wi-Fi, lets users to have various services at home and company in wireless,” said Park. “It provides differentiated service point to service providers enabling them to introduce new type of services to their customer, which has not been provided by PSTN service before.”

Service providers in Korea, using UD phones has added more than 500,000 residential subscribers only in 10 months.
