CIDCO Selects Texas Instruments As Enterprise IP
Phone DSP And VoIP Software Provider
CIDCO Incorporated announced it will
team with Texas Instruments Incorporated
(TI) to build a version of its enterprise IP phones, based on the TI DSP
technology. By utilizing TMS320C5472 enterprise IP phone processor with
Telogy Software products for toll quality Voice over IP, CIDCO will
reinforce its position as a worldwide leader in telephony products,
services and appliances that empower consumers to communicate simply and
easily over advanced telephony networks and the Internet.
"CIDCO chose TI to help us extend our capabilities in the growing
enterprise IP telephone market," noted Mark Jensen, director of
product management for CIDCO. "We believe that TI's track record of
supporting the software tools needed to get ahead in this market, coupled
with their dual MAC architecture, toll quality Telogy VoIP software, and a
software architecture capable of supporting a wide variety of VOIP
protocol stacks will enable us to move rapidly in the VOIP marketspace.
CIDCO's IP telephones will allow businesses to replace traditional
circuit-switched PBXs with more efficient, feature rich IP telephone
systems. On a cost-per-extension basis, such systems can be less expensive
than circuit-switched solutions, and these systems make a variety of new
features possible, including find me/follow me, unified messaging and
seamless telecommuting, while delivering standard PBX features."
Today's announcement is CIDCO's third significant step in three months
toward building a major presence in the Voice over Internet Protocol
(VoIP) market. CIDCO previously announced plans with AG Communication
Systems, a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies, to deliver next-generation
IP Centrex solutions. Based on this new relationship, CIDCO will develop
and manufacture IP telephones that interoperate with the 7R/E iMerge
Centrex Feature Gateway (CFG). In June, CIDCO announced it would develop a
line of IP telephones based on Netergy Networks' IP chipset to address
customers of Netergy's hosted i-PBX solution.
CIDCO plans to release a line of telephones beginning with the IP210 in
the first quarter of 2001 and the IP200 following shortly thereafter. The
solution will be compatible with VoIP industry standard protocols SIP,
H.323 and MGCP, and will feature the VoIP industry's de facto standard for
Voice over IP software, Telogy Software products. The IP200 will be a
basic business telephone and will support a full duplex speakerphone,
three-line display, two-line appearances and system feature keys. The
IP210 will be a full-featured business set with three-line appearances and
a large format screen that will support a variety of IP-delivered
applications. The development of IP phones expands CIDCO's telephony
business and allows the company to enter the growing VoIP enterprise
market in addition to its traditional residential consumer market.
With more than 80% of the enterprise IP phone market, Texas
Instruments' enterprise IP phone solutions deliver toll quality voice to
the desktop while simultaneously reducing telecommunications management
costs through the integration of voice and data on a single network. TI's
solution is the leader in voice quality, matching or exceeding the audio
quality of traditional circuit-switched telephony. By employing this
integrated solution, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can shorten
time to market while reducing engineering risk. TI's enterprise IP phone
solutions are supported by a complete range of high quality software tools
and a choice of pre-integrated real time operating system (RTOS) software
packages (Wind River Systems' VxWorks and ATI's Nucleus).
"We are pleased to be supporting CIDCO, a worldwide leader in
telephony, as they build their VoIP product line," said Nancy Goguen,
vice president, marketing, Telogy Networks, A Texas Instruments Company.
"Our C5472 DSP-based enterprise IP phone processor and Telogy
Software products will complement perfectly CIDCO's network
appliances."
TI's TMS320C5472 IP phone processor integrates a TMS320C54x DSP with an
ARM 7 RISC CPU, VoIP-enabling Telogy Software products, two 10/100 IEEE
802.3 Ethernet media access controllers (MACs), and analog wide-band
codecs. This interoperable solution utilizes the most advanced standards,
including Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Media Gateway Control
Protocol (MGCP). In addition, the processor supports acoustic echo
cancellation which achieves toll quality voice processing, and is fully
compliant with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) G.167,
G.711, G.723.1A, G.726, and G.729AB specifications. TI's Enterprise IP
Phone solution operates both with emerging Internet Protocol - Private
Branch Exchange (IP-PBX) telephony systems and with existing, LAN-enabled
proprietary PBX systems.
