The report categorizes the global RF duplexer market into four major
segments based on application. They are:
-
Smartphones
-
Set-top box
-
Laptops
-
Tablets
Smartphones
In terms of revenue, the smartphone segment is expected to grow at a
CAGR of over 12% during the forecast period. The smartphone segment is
one of the key end-users of RF duplexers. The segment accounted for over
76% of the total revenue in 2015.
According to Asif Gani, a lead analyst at Technavio for semiconductor
equipment, the emergence of
multiple cellular standards such as global systems for mobile
communications (GSM), code division multiple access (CDMA), and 4G/LTE (News - Alert)
makes the deployment of RF duplexers in smartphones necessary, as they
allow the simultaneous transmission and reception of signals in
different frequency bands on a single antenna.
3G and 4G smartphones can operate in multiple bands based on
GSM/enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) and 3G high-speed
packet access/wideband code division multiple access (HSPA/WCDMA)
standards. Continuous innovation in smartphones will support additional
bands in LTE and WCDMA standards, requiring 10 more frequency bands of
operation. RF duplexers have a crucial role to play in signal
transmission. The evolution of LTE standards and the increased adoption
of smartphones in the global market will help boost the demand for RF
duplexers durig the forecast period.
Set-top box
The set-top box (STB) segment of the global RF duplexer market is
expected to at a CAGR of close to 11% during the forecast period. STBs
help stream subscribed channels on users' TVs. Their primary job is to
convert analog and digital signals into video and audio content. RF
components are used in STBs to provide uninterrupted TV services and
features such as video-on-demand and time-shifted TV. RF duplexers are
used in STBs for uninterrupted signal transmission.
With the growing proliferation of smart TVs and increasing demand for HD
content, revenue from the STB segment will grow during the forecast
period. However, the percentage contribution of this segment will
witness a marginal decline to 9.7% in 2020 from 10.3% in 2015 due to the
increasing adoption of internet TV, which can be accessed by any
multimedia device. The device's long product life cycle, low profit
margins, and low degree of technological innovation are the other major
factors that make the STB market less attractive to RF duplexer
manufacturers.
Laptops
The laptop segment of the global RF duplexer market is expected to grow
at a CAGR of over 6% during the forecast period. This segment is
expected to witness a decline of more than 2% during the forecast period
due to various factors such as the declining sales of laptops and other
portable PCs in line with the increased adoption of mobile devices such
as smartphones and tablets across the globe and the high cost of new
touchscreen laptops.
"However, despite the expected decline in the percentage contribution,
revenue from the segment will grow to USD 168 million by 2020 due to the
high growth potential of the overall RF duplexer market," says Asif.
Tablets
The tablet segment of the global RF duplexer market is expected to
increase at an impressive CAGR of over 21% during the forecast period.
Since their introduction, tablets have been widely adopted across the
globe as replacements for laptops. Deployment of next-generation long
term evolution (LTE) wireless networks has accelerated the demand for
LTE-based tablets.
Due to the introduction of multiple frequency bands, circuit designers
are organizing RF devices in various combinations for optimum
performance and to mitigate potential signal interference issues. For
instance, RF device manufacturers are combining power amplifiers with
duplexers in multi-band configurations to ensure optimum performance.
All these factors are expected to accelerate the demand for RF duplexers
in the tablet segment.
