MIPS Technologies Partners with Intrinsyc Software


MIPS Technologies, Inc., a provider of processor architectures and cores, and Intrinsyc Software International, Inc., a provider of software solutions for mobile devices, are partnering to bring 3.5G functionality to the MIPS architecture.

Officials with MIPS Technologies (News - Alert) said that the companies are porting Intrinsyc's RapidRIL software to the the company’s architecture in order to accelerate mobile SoC development for MIPS licensees around the globe.

At the upcoming Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) being held February 15-18 in Barcelona, the companies plan to demonstrate 3.5G voice calls with audio and video playback on a MIPS-Based Android platform.

'Intrinsyc is widely known as a key mobile software solutions provider, and we are pleased to work with them to make 3.5G telephony on MIPS a reality,' said Art Swift (News - Alert), vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies, in a statement.

Swift said that developing these software stacks is key to enabling the customers to bring mobile products to market fast.

“Thanks to our 'Android (News - Alert) on MIPS' initiative and MIPS Technologies' compelling performance/power consumption advantages, a wide range of companies will now be able to quickly and cost-effectively build enhanced 3G mobile functionality into their devices,' he said.

David Manuel, vice president and general manager, Device Development Solutions at Intrinsyc, said that the company is delighted to join the MIPS Alliance Program and work closely with MIPS Technologies to develop optimized mobile solutions for MIPS.

Manuel said that with the combination of the Android platform and MIPS Technologies' strength in consumer electronics, this relationship has far reaching promise.

“The optimized solution has the potential to bring 3.5G functionality to a number of devices such as ebook readers, personal and automotive navigation devices, portable media players, mobile internet devices (MIDs), digital photo frames and smartphones,' he added.

Recently MIPS Technologies and Mavrix Technology Inc., a fabless company developing complete SoC solutions for the emerging Mobile Digital TV (MDTV) and portable multimedia market, announced that they are working together to develop MIPS-Based applications processor for mobile devices. Mavrix is one of MIPS Technologies' lead customers as it expands into the mobile phone market.

Mavrix and MIPS are working closely with companies in MIPS Technologies' mobile ecosystem to develop a mobile SoC design that leverages the Android platform.
