GSMA to Showcase Features of the 'Connected City'

GSMA (News - Alert) proposes to unveil its Connected City concept at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona. The concept city, touted as the city of the future, will showcase future living conditions where everything and everyone is connected by intuitive wireless connectivity.

Michael O’Hara, chief marketing officer at GSMA, said, “The Connected City demonstrates how mobile is already enhancing businesses and societies around the world. The progress of connected devices and machine-to-machine communications will be hot topics at Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) 2013, and the city will inspire all of us, across many industries, to recognize the potential of pervasive mobile connectivity to impact our lives.”

According to officials, the Connected City, featuring a complete urban environment, will have a town hall, department store, apartment, electrical store, hotel, cafe and lounge, office, a car showroom and a street.

Separate areas will display new products and experiences that showcase how mobile connectivity will enhance the daily lives of people covering all aspects of life – automotive, education, health, homes, retail and so on.

Mobile devices are affecting people’s routines perhaps the most. Exhibits will highlight this via products like the connected bike, which monitors performance in relation to its environment. Remote health monitoring will also be demonstrated, as something that can link people to healthcare professionals from their own homes.

Also on display are intelligent logistics services that provide more efficient ways of transporting people and goods, aside from smart technology that establishes the mobile as the control center of a house, and in-car services that keep us informed even on the go.

The Connected City also showcases the effects of rapid mobile growth and its effect on how to get in on this trend.

Companies like AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Accenture, Qualcomm, Samsung, SAP, Teletron, Volvo, Telenor (News - Alert), Connexion, Vodafone and others have come together to build the concept of the Connected City, officials said.

Commenting on a new digital mobile wallet technology, to be launched at the Mobile World Congress, Michael O’Hara, chief marketing officer at GSMA, said the GSMA is excited to launch the NFC Experience for Mobile World Congress 2013, as it provides attendees with the opportunity to experience first-hand the potential that NFC technology holds, both throughout the Mobile World Congress venue and in Barcelona.
