British TV Broadcaster Channel 4 has scooped up the prestigious IBC2012 award for its partnership and app development with KIT digital. The Innovation Award is generally given to the minds behind new applications of TV Broadcasting technologies, and therefore was perfectly suited for Channel 4.

The station’s recent partnership with KIT digital produced a new on demand video service, which connects 4oD to gaming consoles like the Xbox 360. The app makes use of the Xbox’s inherent features and applies them to the on demand video experience, allowing users to select and peruse movie options with Xbox’s signature voice and gesture control system. 

KIT is, in its own right, a leader among video software and management services companies, and is not new to the app development game. Recently, KIT designed news app with Microsoft, Akamai (News - Alert), and Metabroadcast, among others. The game-changing innovation of harnessing Xbox’s gesture and voice controls came to fruition thanks to KIT’s experience and expertise within the realm of app creation.

It was the gesture/voice controls that established the 4oD system as superior to other on demand video programs. KIT and Channel 4 discovered a rare and coveted way in which they might separate themselves from the pack, and were rewarded for their novel ideas. 

Channel 4 is now officially the world’s first broadcaster to wrangle an on demand video system of this nature, and because of this the network anticipates great spikes in revenue. With users experiencing 4oD for the first time, interacting with their video experience on such a new level, many are sure to be utterly enticed and enchanted with the new way of getting movies.
