Considering the growing popularity of digital TV, digital video technology and high-speed networks are combined together in a set-top-box to provide a wide variety of value-added services to consumers.
According to a statement, Televes, a European Set-Top Box (STB) manufacturer, has chosen httv's "httvBOX" turn-key solution based on Sigma Designs' (News - Alert) SMP8670 SoC for its free-to-air hybrid STB (set-top box).
SMP8670 SoC has been developed by Sigma Designs, a provider of System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for home entertainment connectivity and control, and will debut at the 2012 IBC show in Amsterdam next month.
This advanced, cost-effective solution is the first Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) deployment based on the Sigma SoC. It has been created for at the HbbTV and hybrid DVB-T/IP markets.
Waheed Rasheed, vice president of Marketing at Sigma Designs said, “We are thrilled to announce the first deployment of an STB incorporating the Sigma-based 'httvBOX' solution, which offers best in class performance for interactive broadcast standards such as HbbTV. Our open framework SDK solution for SMP8670 that supports QT-Webkit enabled the fast port of httvBOX middleware, and the partnership between Sigma Designs and httv has resulted in a highly interactive and cost-effective hybrid solution to the fast growing European FTA market.”
Televes is the first set-top-box manufacturer to use the combination of Sigma's SoC and the HbbTV turn-key solution that will enable consumers to get broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment at the same time.
"We are excited that our collaboration with Sigma Designs is starting to bear fruit with the release of Televes' newest STB -- the first device based on our httvBOX middleware," said Bernard Dupin, CEO of httv group. "HbbTV is a fast-growing standard, and we look forward to uncovering new opportunities for this technology in the European market with Televes and Sigma Designs."
