Motorola Intros CDMA Femtocell Solution

Motorola (News - Alert) unveiled its new expanded femtocell portfolio, featuring a CDMA solution, at the CTIA Wireless (News - Alert) 2008 show this week. The company is expanding its femtocell customer premises equipment (CPE) product line, which now includes a 3G UMTS femtocell product.

With its CDMA femtocell product, and previously announced 3G UMTS solution, Motorola now offers systems for both technologies. The CDMA femtocell solution is slated to be available during the fourth quarter of 2008.

“From infrastructure to CPE, Motorola’s experience in leading the development of femtocell technology is further fuelling the deployment and adoption of femtocells as a smart solution to connect to a consumer’s existing broadband service and provide higher-quality, higher-performance wireless voice and real-time data services inside the home,” said Darren McQueen, vice president for IMS, cellular and broadband network technologies division of Motorola’s home and networks mobility business, in a statement.

McQueen continued: “With the addition of our CDMA femtocell portfolio, we can offer a fully tested and integrated, low-risk, fast-to-market solution to an even broader range of wireless and broadband users.”

Motorola’s technology bridges IP and wireless networks. Its femtocell solution, with the help of standard communication protocols such as Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP), enables CDMA wireless carriers to accelerate the use of IP-based core networks to immediately take advance of cost and service advantages.

Motorola’s femtocell portfolio is enhanced by the company’s NBBS device management system. This is a scalable service and CPE management solution that enables WiMAX, GSM and CDMA operators minimize support cost and to accelerate the introduction of new services and devices.

Femtocells are small, low-cost and low-power cellular access points that connect to a consumer’s existing broadband Internet service. Femtocells enable operators to provide higher-quality and higher-performance wireless voice and real-time data services. In addition, Femtocells enable a lower cost of delivery for wireless traffic than macrocell networks.

By using femtocells, customers gain a seamless communication experience as they roam from inside to outside their homes, reducing “in-home” call charges at the same time  —  as well as improving indoor coverage and consolidating bills.

Motorola is a member of the Femto Forum, an independent industry association that supports femtocell deployments worldwide.
