Mindspeed Integrates Lionic's DPI Technology into Comcerto 2000 Processor Family

As broadband service providers expand their offerings within the digital home and small office markets, more and more consumers are seeking secured digital experiences with their routers and access points.

In an effort to cater to these security needs of consumers and service providers, Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (MSPD), a supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, has fully integrated Lionic Corporation’s Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology with its latest Comcerto 2000 multi-core ARM (News - Alert) Cortex-A communications processor family.

Mindspeed’s Comcerto 2000 multi-core ARM Cortex-A CPU-based communications processors are ideally suited for either control processors or for mixed control and data plane applications.

These processors can be used in a variety of secure systems, including security gateways or converged broadband home routers (BHR) and set-top box (STB) media gateways that require digital rights management (DRM) support.

With the integration of Lionic’s DPI technology into Mindspeed’s Comcerto 2000 processor family, Comcerto 2000 will now be able to provide good performance in gateway-based antivirus solutions, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), application-level policy enforcement and content management, and other security tasks.

Consequently, service providers will be able to incorporate more security and application-based Quality of Service (QoS) into their products.

Marco E. Bello, executive director of marketing and product management for the communications convergence processing (CCP) business unit at Mindspeed, said in a statement, “With our latest communications processor family, we are addressing a wide range of security applications which all benefit from the performance and cost-effectiveness of our Comcerto 2000 product and the addition of Lionic’s embedded functionality.”

Mindspeed’s Comcerto 2000 processors leverage intelligent offloading to run wire-rate Gigabit-per-second IPv6 NAT and firewall applications as well, while keeping the 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processors completely available for executing value-added applications from OEMs or service providers.

Lionic’s advanced DPI functionality is now also a part of Mindspeed’s Open Packet Acceleration Logic (OPAL) wire-speed data-path acceleration technology, apart from the Comcerto 2000’s dual 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9.

Consequently, the carrier-class solution is ideally suited to many new product classes found in broadband-enabled residences and small-to-medium business (SMB) settings, such as enterprise-class DPI for residential and SMB devices, advanced parental control for telco-managed gateways, application-based quality of service for 802.11ac enterprise access points, leading-edge anti-virus, intrusion detection and intrusion prevention, and more.

Mindspeed is currently demonstrating a series of its networking applications running on its Comcerto communications processors at the ongoing 2013 International CES (News - Alert).
