Audi Showcases A3 with 4G LTE Wireless Broadband

Audi AG was showcased this week at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas. The latest Audi A3 includes 4G LTE (News - Alert) wireless connectivity, powered by the MDM9215, a second-generation Gobi multi-mode 3G/4G LTE chipset from Qualcomm (News - Alert) Technologies, Inc.

The improved "Audi connect" services in the A3 boast peak data rates nearly touching 100 megabits per second. These modified services will offer better features like in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, Internet radio and online services, bettering the user experience tremendously.

The services will also offer an amplified navigation system that offers street-level visual descriptions passed on to the vehicle.

In a statement, Ricky Hudi, chief executive engineer of Electrics/Electronics at Audi AG said, "Audi was the first automaker to highlight the potential for LTE connectivity in vehicles at CES (News - Alert) 2012 and now becomes the first automaker to announce a commercial model with embedded 4G LTE connectivity. As a highlight, we will soon be offering a fully integrated LTE link for our Audi connect services in the new Audi A3 in 2013."

Audi will deploy the Gobi MDM9215 chipset in the automotive module. Audi connect will be powered by the solution with 4G LTE speeds. Instantaneous navigation, weather and travel information can be facilitated by the solution.

The solution also offers extremely rapid Wi-Fi hotspot access for a maximum of eight devices in the car.

Gobi technology from Qualcomm has been used by major automakers for more than 10 years. The developer is one of the major suppliers of 3G and 4G technologies and chipsets for passenger-car telematics and connected-car services across the globe.

Kanwalinder Singh, senior VP of Business Development at Qualcomm Technologies said, "We hope to introduce to automobiles the same 4G LTE connectivity that Qualcomm brought to today's leading smartphones and mobile computing devices. The capabilities of the MDM9215 chipset allows Audi to define a new in-car media experience, including viewing and interacting with content on the head unit as well as on passengers' own Wi-Fi-connected smartphones and tablets, all at 4G LTE speeds."
