CES 2013: ScreenBeam Leverages Wi-Fi Direct for Porting Content to the TV

Actiontec Electronics (News - Alert) has launched ScreenBeam, a wireless display kit that lets users mirror their PC, tablet and smartphone displays to an HDTV. Actiontec offers ScreenBeam as both a standalone wireless display adapter and as a kit.

ScreenBeam is among the first devices approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance (News - Alert) for its Wi-Fi Certified Miracast program, which simplifies discovery and setup in streaming content to TVs. Miracast users can do things like view pictures from a smartphone on a big screen television, share a laptop screen with the conference room projector in real time, and watch live programs from a home cable box on a tablet.

Miracast connections are formed using Wi-Fi Direct, so access to a Wi-Fi network is not needed; the ability to connect is inside Miracast-certified devices as they make peer-to-peer connections.

The Wi-Fi Alliance projects shipments of Miracast-capable devices to exceed 1.5 billion units by 2016.

As a standalone wireless display adapter, ScreenBeam is compatible with a broad range of Miracast-certified sources including laptops, smartphones, tablets and devices running Android (News - Alert) or WiDi 3.5 and higher.

The ScreenBeam kit, meanwhile, includes wireless display software and a USB transmitter for Windows 7 and 8 PCs. Both offer a 50-foot range, with no line-of-sight required.

"Both consumers and professionals want to experience multimedia on the best possible screen," said Dean Chang, president and CEO at Actiontec. "It's no longer acceptable to subject your friends or colleagues to watching your content on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop screen when you can beam it to your projector or flat-panel. ScreenBeam is a simple and affordable way to take advantage of the biggest and best screens in your home or office."

“Miracast certification ensures interoperability across a wide range of products,” he added, “and Actiontec has tirelessly tested against all known Miracast-certified source devices to ensure customers have a great experience. ScreenBeam works with all device types and brands; its versatility will continue to grow as consumers bring more Miracast devices into their homes and offices.”
