Sonus’s New Reseller Agreement With Samsung

BY JOHANNE TORRES

Telecom, semiconductor, digital media and digital convergence technologies provider Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. (news - alert), and Sonus Networks (news - alert), a provider of voice over IP (VoIP - define - news - alert) infrastructure solutions, jointly announced today that they just entered into a partnership that will facilitate the transformation of wireless networks to VoIP. The companies have entered into a non-exclusive global reseller agreement through which Samsung will sell and support Sonus VoIP solutions to mobile operators around the world.

"As wireless operators continue to experience growth in both subscribers and data traffic, they are accelerating their migration to next-generation wireless voice networks," said Hassan Ahmed, chairman and CEO, Sonus Networks. "Our partnership with Samsung leverages Sonus's proven VoIP technology to deliver a next-generation wireless solution that enables integrated multi-media services in addition to realizing reductions in operating costs."

The new agreement will allow Sonus to further market its GSX9000 Open Services Switch. It will also enable Samsung to add new products and services to its mobile networking technology suite and deliver a solution that allows for a full range of wireless applications and services. Both companies seem to be able to benefit from the partnership that will further expand Sonus' reach into the global wireless market while enhancing Samsung's VoIP strategy including provision of a migration path to an all-IP wireless network.

"To meet various requirements of service operators in the rapidly growing VoIP market, Samsung realized the importance of establishing a partnership with industry pioneers like Sonus Networks. And Samsung will extend our business capabilities in Telecommunication System market continuously through these kinds of partnerships," said Seyoung Oh, vice president of planning team, Telecommunication System Division, Samsung Electronics.

Previous to today’s announcement, Chelmsford, Massachusetts-based Sonus announced that in December 2004 alone, service providers globally reported that they are now carrying an estimated 10 billion minutes of customer traffic per month on their Sonus-based VoIP networks. The worldwide traffic milestone represented a significant increase for the company from the estimated 6 billion minutes per month in December 2003. The company was founded in 1997.
