Popular Telephony Inks Deals With Up Tech, MOBIBASE and IFEX NV

BY JOHANNE TORRES

Popular Telephony Inc., a French company known for its “serverless” telephony products, made announcements today about partnerships with Up Tech, a softphones, terminal adaptors, Internet access devices, IP phones, PSTN phones and mobility connectivity services provider; MOBIBASE, a French aggregator and distributor of graphic and video content for mobile networks; and IFEX NV, a pan-European investment bank.

The company inked a deal with Beijing, China-based UP Technologies (UP Tech) to provide Peerio-enabled end-to-end VoIP solutions. According to the new partnership, UP Tech’s IP telephony devices and adapter will now integrate the Popular Telephony Peerio serverless technology as a standard feature set providing UP Tech’s product range with complete serverless capability. By partnering with Popular Telephony for Peerio, UP Tech will be able to enhance their entire product portfolio and facilitate their expansion from hardware manufacturer to becoming a consolidated service provider.

UP Tech’s latest VoIP solutions include IP terminal adaptors that allow customers to use PSTN (or analog) phones as IP devices, residential IP phones as softphone alternatives and extensive mobility connectivity services. With a current user-base of over 400,000, UP Tech’s VoIP services provide lower cost and higher performance IP communication via their branded uuPhone product.

“Popular Telephony’s Peerio product has the potential to change how communication is done on a grand scale. The concept is powerful with the economics on its side. It eliminates the complexity and the server dependency of legacy circuit switched networks and reduces the costs associated with them. We are excited about the potential opportunities Peerio may bring to the Chinese market,” says Chareleson Zheng, CEO of UP Tech.

Popular Telephony also announced today that it signed a deal with MOBIBASE to jointly begin a technical trial of the PeerioBiz serverless peer-to-peer IP softphone for business LAN (Local Area Network) telephony. MOBIBASE, a multi-site enterprise installed PeerioBiz softphones in four of its satellite offices in Paris, London, an agency located in the United States and a second agency in France.

Based on the Peerio middleware, PeerioBiz is a next generation intelligent voice application for computer terminals, delivering seamless voice services to the enterprise without the use of any centralized node (e.g, PBX, control center or server). Popular Telephony’s serverless softphone trial version currently supports up to 25 basic telephony features, such as ones of a software-based IP PBX system. The full licensed version of PeerioBiz today supports up to 200 telephony features.

MOBIBASE is currently completing testing of PeerioBiz software within its offices and will later expand it to a full trial enterprise wide of the GNUP interconnect. The final trial phase will involve an enterprise PSTN interconnect via Digitrad, a Peerio partner and next generation international service provider, based in France. MOBIBASE will then evaluate further deployment based upon results of the trial.

"We’re excited to trial the Peerio serverless approach because this is the first solution to date which has meet all the high-standards for advanced business communications. It provides us all of the necessary PBX functionality, with redundancy, security and a scaleable architecture. PeerioBiz fits perfectly with our multi-site needs while providing an enormous immediate savings on system purchase and by reducing ongoing maintenance costs”, said Laurent Sarver, the co-founder of MOBIBASE.

Another deal that was announced today by Popular Telephony is one with pan-European banking company IFEX NV and the support of their telecom and VoIP consulting partner M-PLANET. Together, the three companies will conduct an enterprise field trial of Peerio serverless telephony technology in their offices in Sophia-Antipolis ( France), Amsterdam and London.

Popular Telephony says this represents the first serverless communications enterprise field trial to be conducted and announced in Europe and will test the implementation of server-free peer-to-peer business telephony system comprised solely of IP phones powered by Peerio serverless middleware.

The Peerio-enabled devices installed at the IFEX premises will fully interface with the existing telephone equipment and operate seamlessly, as if being served by IP PBX. On-site personnel will have access to a variety of popular PBX features, using the system for the internal interconnect over LAN, global IP interconnect over the WAN using Peerio GNUP and for the PSTN interconnect via the Peerio-enabled network media gateway.

“We’re pleased to partner with IFEX NV and M-Planet for the first field testing of a Peerio enterprise serverless telephony system, the most advanced communications system available on the market today," said Sandra Mandine, the director of European Marketing in Popular Telephony. "Field trials like this will enable Popular Telephony to prepare the solution for the commercial deployment during this year. We also are grateful to Atonics, a Peerio partner company, for the support provided for this trial."
