TMCnet Exclusive: Coaxsys and McDonough Telephone to Roll Out IPTV

BY JOHANNE TORRES

On Monday, Coaxsys Incorporated, provider of networking over existing wires solutions, will announce that McDonough Telephone Cooperative of Illinois will be using the company’s IPTV 7000 TVnet Network to deliver Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) to its customers. With this service, Coaxsys says that McDonough will be the first member of the Western Illinois Video (WIV) group to achieve an in-home networking solution over existing wiring in the home.

Coaxsys TVnet is said to instantly transform in-home coaxial wiring into a high-speed, IPTV-ready digital entertainment network. Because of the service's plug-and-play installation, McDonough will no longer have to engage in costly home rewires, therefore achieving more a more cost effective and rapid market penetration in IPTV.

As member of Western Illinois Video, McDonough Telephone Cooperative has served rural customers in Western Illinois for more than fifty years. It currently offers long distance, business services, and Internet access to its customers. Now, with the adoption of Coaxsys' TVnet, McDonough will be able to also add on IPTV services to its offering.

"IPTV represents an exciting opportunity for us and our subscribers," said McDonough Central Office’s supervisor Melvin Moore. "Throughout our company's history we have looked for ways to provide our customers with value-added services. IPTV is clearly such an opportunity, and Coaxsys' TVnet is the only product we've seen that has enabled us to avoid having to rewire each home. It works right out of the box, which is going to save us - and our customers - a lot of time and money."

Coaxsys IPTV 7000 TVnet adapters can be installed without service personnel or software. After connecting a TVnet adapter to the video or broadband source, all coax jacks throughout a home become network-enabled. End-users will then be able to gain access to the Internet, stream higher-quality video and audio (including HDTV and multichannel TV), and share peripherals by simply connecting a TVnet adapter to the coax jack.

Gregory Boe, VP of Sales at Coaxsys, explained: "McDonough is ahead of the curve with its deployment of IPTV. Telcos across the country recognize the need to identify a cost-effective solution that does not require rewiring. TVnet utilizes the coaxial wiring already in-place in most homes throughout the country, transforming old-fashioned coax into a full-fledged Internet and video-streaming network. Our plug-and-play technology will enable McDonough to instantly compete with cable and satellite television offerings."

TVnet delivers up to 104 Mbps transfer rate and supports distances up to 250 feet. The service is also compatible with TV splitters and supports Ethernet unicast, multicast, and broadcast.
