BellSouth Long Distance Inc. made an official announcement this week about selecting Tekelec for its EAGLE 5 Signaling Applications System (SAS) with integrated local number portability (LNP). Tekelec describes the EAGLE 5 SAS as a high-capacity multi-protocol advanced signaling system.
According to Calabasas, CA-based Tekelec, the EAGLE 5 SAS hosts applications like SS7 signal transfer, number portability, signaling gateway, integrated services, monitoring and data acquisition. The system supports the IETF Sigtran suite of signaling protocols for next-gen network connectivity, creating a clear path forward to packet telephony and 3G networks.
Additionally, the service platform is structured to provide operators with features to support up to 1,500 links and 96 million number portability subscriber records. It enables a speed of up to 640,000 transactions (MSU) per second, which will lower costs without the addition of network facilities.
Thanks to the partnership, BellSouth Long Distance will be deploying Tekelec’s EAGLE 5 SAS in the second quarter 2005 to support consumer and small business long distance traffic. The EAGLE platform incorporates Tekelec’s LNP solution, which simplifies number portability by integrating database management and signaling functions directly into the system.
"Tekelec’s LNP solution will help control BellSouth’s costs as well as improve reliability and support future local number portability complexities," said Hamilton Gray, Network VP for the Long Distance division of Atlanta, GA-based BellSouth Corp., which has joint control and 40 percent ownership of Cingular Wireless.
"Our unique architecture combined with the proven performance and reliability of the EAGLE platform addresses the demands that operators face today and well into the future," said Monty Johnson, president and general manager of Tekelec’s Network Signaling Division. "With our market-leading signaling solution, BellSouth is able to provide the connectivity and functionality needed to meet the existing network needs, while reducing operations costs."
