8x8 Inc., the Packet8 VoIP and videophone service provider, announced today that the service just added 987 new U.S. rate centers for Local Inbound Service and 660 rate centers for E911 service to all Packet8 broadband calling plans.
The company currently uses the 3VoIP Local Inbound Service from Level 3 Communications, Inc. allowing it to now cover 3,883 U.S. rate centers, significantly increasing the availability of the service throughout the US. The company says the additional E911 rate centers will broaden the availability of this optional Packet8 service feature to a total of 1607 rate centers including newly added cities such as Dallas, Louisville, Memphis, Flagstaff and Spokane.
Packet8 has been providing a VoIP-based replacement to E911 services since last June. The service automatically routes calls and computer-based "screen pops" of caller information to emergency personnel at local Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). Because the 911 call is routed as emergency traffic and is accompanied by E911 caller information, Packet8 says emergency personnel can ensure that callers receive the same kind of response that they are accustomed to receiving from legacy, switched telecommunications service provided by incumbent telephone carriers.
"8x8 remains committed to offering low priced, superior quality VoIP service to residential and small business customers in both isolated rural communities and large metropolitan areas," said 8x8 Chairman and CEO Bryan Martin. "As the market penetration of broadband phone service continues to grow, so too does the demand for critical features like real E911 support. 8x8 is still the only VoIP provider to offer this invaluable service."
