DataLogic Goes Retail

BY JOHANNE TORRES

Irvine, CA-based DataLogic International, Inc. (newsalert - quote) just announced it plans to directly sell its VoIP equipment products to consumers as early as next month. The company plans to serve as the retail arm of its subsidiary IPN Communications.

Starting up its new marketing plan, the company will form alliances with various retail channels to market and sell its products, and will also launch a separate Web site that will offer product purchase and account management online. The company plans to start selling its compact USB handheld phone, an Ethernet desktop phone, and an IP phone adapter.

DataLogic’s USB compact handheld for remote workers, the i300, can be plugged into a laptop or desktop computer with a wired or wireless Internet connection to make discounted or free long distance calls via VoIP. Its Ethernet desktop phone, the i450, can be plugged into a router or network and has land telephone-like voice clarity and functionalities.

DataLogic’s IP phone adapter, the v22, is a network device that plugs in between a router or network and a conventional analog phone. The device allows users to place calls via Voice over IP (VoIP) ( define - news - alert - tutorial) with a land phone. The device also serves as an additional line on a multi-line phone.

Since all calls made will be routed through the company's communication server, all IP to IP calls will be free of charge, and IP to land line phone calls are charged at a discounted long distance rate based on the destination. There will be no required contract or monthly service charge. All account usage will be prepaid online with unused minutes to be carried over indefinitely.

"We have received numerous accolades about our products and expect that their ease of use will enhance the public's acceptance of VoIP as a convenient and cost effective communication alternative," commented Keith Nguyen, DataLogic's president.
