Xten eyeBeams VoIP

BY JOHANNE TORRES

Are voice and conferencing over IP just becoming passé? If you thought that voice and conferencing over IP are the hottest technologies on the net, then get ready for video over IP via SIP softphones! Xten (newsalert - quote), a provider of SIP-based Voice over IP (VoIP) (define - news - alert - tutorial) softphones and software, just launched eyebeam—a video SIP softphone. eyeBeam supports open standards video using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and the H.263 video codec, which supports TV quality video transmissions. This enables service providers to deliver videoconferencing via IP to their customers, thus opening new IP revenue streams.

eyeBeam offers an exciting array of cool features. Users of X-PRO SIP softphone can transfer and forward calls, view who’s dialing via caller ID, and conference call with up to 10 users. eyeBeam enhances this feature set with the addition of acoustic echo cancellation, voice activity detection, adaptive jitter buffer and message waiting indicator.

"eyeBeam is one of the few video SIP softphones in the industry that can be readily deployed today by the leading providers in the VoIP market," explains Erik Lagerway, president and chief operating officer of Xten. "Xten has realized amazing recognition with service providers worldwide from our voice software. Now we are taking it to the next level with open standards video."

The company claims that its Rapid Branding process allows multiple service operators a speedy time-to-market softphone bundle built on open standards technology. eyeBeam is also available as an SDK that includes the following low-level APIs: Audio, Video, HTTP, STUN, SIP Stack, SIP Call Control, SDP, RTP, ICE and DNS. The eyeBeam SDK will provide carriers with maximum control of their customized SIP endpoints.

Xten's softphone is equipped with plug-and-play firewall traversal technology and protocols such as Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE) while also supporting emerging applications such as wireless VoIP and video. Xten has a feature-rich FREE SIP softphone dubbed X-Lite, in addition to the fully featured X-PRO commercial softphone. Xten's softphones are fully RFC3261 (SIP), RTP/RTCP (RFC 1889) and SDP (RFC 3264) compliant. They are available for Windows (Windows 98SE/ME/NT 4/2000/XP/CE), Mac OS X and Pocket PC operating systems.
