TMC's editors sat down with Alan
Percy, director of software partner business development for Audiocodes,
and asked him what types of opportunities he forecasts for Session
Initiation Protocol (SIP), and what impact it will have on VoIP
communications in general. His response is below.
First, we sense that the market finally sees an
opportunity with SIP to finally break the shackles of the proprietary
hardware equipment. For so long that the telecommunication
equipment manufactures have held their customers hostage to overpriced and
limited functionality telephones and other accessory devices. SIP is the
great equalizer, enabling a number of manufacturers' equipment to
interoperate, allowing enterprises to choose the best
equipment for their specific environment. Now vendors can compete on
performance and price in an open environment based on SIP.
Second, we
find developers are telling us that in the future, they want
to offer new services to their customers. Even though SIP is still fairly
young, they can see the extensibility that follows with the IETF
development process as a way to enhance services at some time in the
future.
Lastly and most importantly, the announcement by FCC Chairman Michael
Powell that VoIP-based telecommunication services will be free from the
heavy taxation burden of traditional TDM carriers has spurred a surge in
investment in VoIP technology. As SIP is the current technology that
is ready for deployment, the two forces have intersected, pushing
significant interest and investment in SIP
technology and related equipment.
