Florida Turnpike Picks TransCore's eGo Plus RFID Sticker Tag
 TMCnet Contributing Editor
TransCore announced today that its eGo Plus radio frequency identification sticker tag ( News - Alert) has been chosen by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise to upgrade its current technology.
FTE, which manages the statewide SunPass system used on 460 miles of Florida’s toll highways, has been using its current technology since the late 1990s.
FTE has reportedly placed a multimillion dollar order for 1.5 million paper-thin, batteryless eGo Plus tags. These tags will be sold as the SunPass “Mini” and be available summer 2008 at regular SunPass outlets.
As these new tags are more versatile and affordable, they are expected to overcome the cost barrier to widespread adoption of electronic toll collection technology, according to TransCore. These tags will thus help the migration towards all electronic toll roads and increase the number of customers who pay tolls wirelessly versus manually, company officials say. FTE said it’s decided that the more than three million hardcase SunPass tags currently in use will work alongside the new “mini” tags.
John Simler, president of TransCore Intelligent Transportation Systems Group, said that Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving motorists’ experience by implementing innovative open road tolling designs and providing newer interoperable technology.
He said that after a decade of providing SunPass RFID technology, TransCore recognized the need to provide FTE with next-generation technology to support evolving transportation needs.
According to TransCore, the shift of customers to paying tolls electronically will also reduce congestion and eliminate idle times at toll plazas, significantly reducing vehicle emissions and improving air quality. The smaller profile tag needs less petroleum based raw material to manufacture as well as reduce transportation and shipping requirements, according to the company. Thanks to the battery-less design of the tag, there is no additional cost and demand for batteries’ and subsequent storage and disposal needs, company officials say.
The popular eGo Plus technology is also being used across the nation for high speed tolling by Houston’s Harris County Toll Road Authority, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the Washington Department of Transportation, officials say.
