VoIP Provider Cedar Point Launches Campus Emergency Notification System

TMCnet Contributing Editor

Cedar Point Communications (News - Alert) has developed an emergency alert system for campus and university environments to provide customized warnings on a location-by-location basis.

The Campus Emergency Notification Solution (CENS) issues notifications and instructions to faculty, staff and students by utilizing the capabilities of Cedar Point’s SAFARI C3 Multimedia Switching System and existing university telecommunications plant infrastructure and emergency warning devices.

The solution allows campus security to tailor individual instructions to specific locations, allowing a coordinated response to emergency situations.

According to George Kassas , founder and executive vice president at Cedar Point Communications’ business development division, there is an urgent need for security personnel to be able to communicate instantaneously and constructively with the campus at large.

Although systems have been developed for broadcast messaging to computers and personal communication devices, Kassas believes security can be brought to even higher levels by transmitting individual messages to fixed devices throughout the campus as well.

“Our solution solves two specific problems that exist in campus communications today,” said Kassas in a statement to the press.

He continued: “First, rather than a single broadcast message that essentially provides the same information to all individuals regardless of location, we can tailor messages to the appropriate audience; and second, by placing devices in public places throughout the campus, we reduce or eliminate the possibility that individuals might miss the notification.”

In the Cedar Point solution, SAFARI C3 transmits alerts from campus security to emergency warning devices that are integrated into the existing telephone network throughout the campus. SAFARI C3 can simply and cost-effectively deliver VoIP through the university network.

Each warning device has its own telephone number or extension, and therefore warnings can be customized to best ensure that faculty, staff and students are directed to safety.

Connecting to legacy, RJ11 analog ports, emergency warning devices deliver persistent and pervasive warnings through a combination of voice announcements text displays that can support multiple languages, status lights and direct activation of external alarms and strobes.
