Huawei Deploys GSM-R Communication Solution in Algeria TMCnet Contributing Editor Huawei (News - Alert) has been selected by Algeria Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) to provide a GSM-R communication solution for the 220 kilometer-long Tabia-Mecheria railway line, a passenger transport route in Algeria.
Huawei will provide GSM-R network design and engineering services to SNTF. ALSTOM, a global transport and energy infrastructure provider, will supply the railway signaling system.
The GSM-R solution from Huawei meets ETCS (European Train Control System) Level-2 standards and can support ETCS Level-3. Huawei’s GSM-R end-to-end solutions also satisfy the demand for communication on railways and adhere to the European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network (EIRENE) specifications and requirements.
The EIRENE are the international standards of GSM-R constituted by the Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer (International Union of Railways, UIC).
Huawei's GSM-R solution set a new international high speed benchmark after a successfully test on Shanghai's Maglev Railway at high-speeds of 430 km/h in January 2007. Huawei claims it was the first company to apply GPRS technologies into a railway environment, and introduced highly reliable next generation core network based on a ALL-IP
 platform to GSM-R. “Huawei has been advocating, promoting and investing in GSM-R technologies and innovations for ten years,” said Tian Feng, president of Huawei Technologies Middle East and North Africa, in a press release.
Feng added: “We are glad to have the opportunity to work with SNTF on a GSM-R system which enables Huawei to contribute to the railway communication industry in Algeria.”
Huawei will improve the security and stability of each single network element according to the special requirements of railway mobile communication, and adopt disaster recovery solutions in core network design.

SNTF is a semi-autonomous public entity operating under the aegis of the Algeria Ministry of Transport.
