Each year, the Internet Telephony® Product of the Year application and selection process generates a torrent of interest. This year was certainly no exception, and the deluge of entries made an already difficult task all the more challenging. There were many familiar faces, and when we stop to consider the economic conditions we’ve all been operating in, it’s indeed a positive sign to see so many survivors. One reason these companies have survived is their commitment to quality. These companies have been relentless in the pursuit of their technological vision; they faced down the challenge of the economic downturn; and they released a range of remarkable solutions.

This year’s list offers a wide range of products in a wide range of categories. And the challenge of categorizing many of these products presented no small task -- perhaps made more difficult when you consider many companies prefer not to be “labeled” to begin with. Nevertheless, we offer a brief description of each winning product so that interested readers might at least glimpse the product’s functionality, making it easier for them to continue their research, in their quest to find the right solution for their specific needs.

And so, the editors of Internet Telephony® are proud to present the best of 2002. This list should be construed as a starting place for those of you looking to take the plunge into the world of next-generation packet telephony. In parting, I remind everyone to do their homework, research these companies thoroughly, follow up, and most importantly: Check out those customer references!
