New Bamboo Intros 'Panda' Source Code for Web DevelopersBy Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor New Bamboo has launched “Panda,” a free source code bundle intended to reduce costs for Web developers, design agencies and businesses.
Panda provides a video solution for handling high-volume video uploading, conversion (transcoding) and streaming. It also allows user generated video content to be uploaded more easily onto Web sites.
This solution runs completely in the cloud computing environment provided by Amazon's array of Web services. The application runs on a customized EC2(elastic cloud computing) instance with everything pre-installed, including FFmpeg and wide range of codecs.
SimpleDB is used to store all of data for video, encoding, accounts and encoding profiles. Uploaded and encoded video files are then stored on S3.
“Video is always a thorny issue for developers,” said Damien Tanner, co-founder of New Bamboo, in a statement. “It requires a large amount of space on the server and bandwidth for streaming. The other issue is that uploaded videos must be transcoded into various formats for playback on the Web. This process is incredibly resource intensive, and needs a well executed architecture. Traditionally companies have repeatedly reinvented the wheel - spending a lot of time and money on building this difficult architecture in isolation.”
New Bamboo advises that anyone wanting to allow users to upload video to their site, or handle a large amount of video assets should use Panda.
Tanner added: “Individual developers and large scale businesses can feel confident by using a trusted piece of Open Source software. Our new Open Source platform will save valuable time and money in development costs. Whilst integration with the Panda encoding platform is designed to be as easy as possible using the simple API, we do offer consultation to help develop larger scale architectures and integrate it into a site.”
