U.K.'s IT Energy Puts Reducing Office Waste on the Green Tech Agenda

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

IT Energy is gearing up to launch a new product portfolio at the Green IT 2008 event, scheduled for May 7-8 in London. The conference and expo will focus on green technology issues, strategies and solutions for enterprise and public sector markets.

U.K.-based IT Energy claims to be the first systems integrator in that region focused solely on green information technology (IT). The company’s portfolio launch will stress the need for better power management in the office environment, along with reducing waste from printers.

In its announcement, IT Energy said there are about 11 million desktop PC users in the U.K. workspace alone. Reducing energy usage for all those computers could, therefore, make a significant difference. There is also lots of potential for use of green technology in data centers.

Matt Crane, Managing Director for IT Energy believes that their portfolio can help organizations make immediate power and consumable saving from its desktop PC and workgroup printer community.

“While working with several large customers, we were asked about Green IT and when we looked at the market - there were no dedicated systems integrators that focused solely on the issue at the desktop level,” said Matt Crane, managing director at IT Energy, in a statement. The company now works closely with customers to reduce energy and paper waste while saving money.

For instance, IT Energy estimates that for every 38 pages printed in an office each day, nine are categorized as waste. The company’s The Green Print solution alerts the users beforehand if there are going to be any waste info printed and averts it, thereby saving a lot of paper and money.

“One of our recent customer wins is a large legal firm who had very strict guidelines on quantifying savings which we were able to meet,” Crane said. “In this case, they will save around GBP 44, 000 in energy bills during 2008 which equates to 665,000kw of energy and over a 5 year period 1,429 metric tons of C02 emissions.”

IT Energy sells products from a variety of vendors including Verdiem, Faronics and GreenPrint. These companies partner with Energy Star and Green Grid and The Climate Savers Computing Initiative (News - Alert).

“Talking about Green IT is a hot topic but many organizations are still struggling with the reality of taking the first step,” Crane noted. “Starting with something as simple as desktop PC's and printer waste is relatively simple and generates immediate savings in both energy cost and resulting carbon footprint.”
