Zarlink Intros Energy-efficient, Two-channel VoIP Upgrade Devices for Gateways

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Zarlink recently introduced a new series of VoIP tphone interface devices—the Legerity (News - Alert) VE880 VoicePort Series. Le88266, Le88276 and Le88286 provide pin-compatible upgrades for existing gateways and are designed to deliver increased functionality and enhanced design for residential and enterprise gateways.

The products power-efficient, needing only half the components in comparable solutions and thus requiring half the power. The lessening of components minimizes circuit board area, cutting down on material costs and decreasing manufacturing expenses.

“Continuing worldwide demand for triple-play and VoIP services is driving incumbent and next-generation carriers to deploy multi-service gateways containing Zarlink products,” said Warner Andrews, vice president of marketing for Zarlink's Wired Communications Group, in a statement.

Andrews added that Zarlink continues to demonstrate its commitment and leadership in the voice market by fulfilling the requirements of VoIP service providers.

Industry analyst firm Infonetics studies the market, and found that during 2006 there were 46 million VoIP subscribers. That number is projected to reach 172 million by 2010.

The VE880 Series is optimized for all types of voice-over-broadband residential gateway applications, including cable embedded multimedia terminal adaptors (EMTAs) and DSL integrated access devices (IADs), as well as and fiber to the home (FTTH) optical network terminals (ONTs).

Both narrowband and wideband telephony can be operated with the VE880 VoicePort device. It is supported by the VoicePath API-II Software Development Kit to speed product development, and enable improved telephone line testing capability through the VeriVoice Test Suite software.

An automatic battery switching (ABS (News - Alert)) power supply configuration (Le88266 and Le88286) is one mode of power supply pattern available in the new device. It allows the power to be shared across multiple channels delivering the lowest possible BOM cost. The other mode is used if in need for a battery back up with a tracking power supply configuration (Le88276) that enables the lowest possible power consumption. The VE880 Series can support up to 140 Vpk ringing which is well above carrier and operator requirements.

Available in an 80-pin eLQFP package, the enhanced VoicePort devices deliver two complete FXS telephone line interfaces, from the TDM interface on a broadband SoC, to the tip and ring wires of the RJ-11 or other telephone connector.
