Wireless Growth as Fuel for Mobile VoIP

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

Market researchers and analysts in recent weeks have called for wide adoption of mobile Voice over IP, or “VoIP” technology, including among cellular network operators.

The reasons are varied, though many operators face high costs, as well as a lot of complexity and time as they seek to upgrade their networks to support mobile VoIP.

As John Blau, a research analyst with Unstrung Insider, said mobile VoIP is “no longer just a cheap telephone call.”

“The big advantage of VoIP is its ability to integrate with other systems and stimulate further adoption.”

According to Blau’s report, “Mobile VoIP: A Disruptive Service Goes Mainstream,” many mobile VoIP players are expanding into other applications and integrating with other systems, which in turn is stimulating further adoption. New services such as voice-enhanced IM, voice mashups, and voice plugins are being used to build communities of users.

In addition, operator resistance to mobile VoIP is gradually softening, as major incumbents such as T-Mobile (News - Alert) drop their bans.

Certainly, mobile VoIP is expected to be one of many hot topics discussed during the ITEXPO West 2009, to be held Sept. 1 to 3 in Los Angeles.

One show attendee who’s eager to dig his feet in and talk about the technology is Sanjit Chatterjee, director of marketing for Reve Systems, a Singapore-based company that focuses on the telecom/VoIP industry as well as mobile phone environment.

As Chatterjee told TMC (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani in an interview, printed in full below, global wireless growth has the potential to bolster VoIP use.

Their full exchange follows.

Rich Tehrani (News - Alert): How did you get involved in the communications technology industry?

Sanjit Chatterjee: I moved from the petrochemical industry in 1999 to the Internet industry, when the Internet segment was opened up by the government in India to private players. Thereafter, we were the first to launch commercial VoIP services.

RT: How does your company benefit from communications technology?

SC: We have a distributed workforce in four countries – Singapore, Bangladesh, India and the United Kingdom. So we use VoIP and other internet based communications applications to communicate with the various teams and work as a team, inspite of multi location presence

RT: What changes are you expecting in your tech budget next year? Why?

SC: We continue to invest in technology to make our systems better and more efficient.

RT: President Obama has said the $787 billion economic stimulus package will help the economy this year. What do you think about that? In your view, how will that money impact the communications market, if at all?

SC: Some of it should flow in to drive innovations in technology, making telecom adoption rates higher and costs going down.

RT: Following up on that, we’re now formally starting the process of broadband stimulus money allocation and spending. What do you think of that activity? What effect will broadband stimulus have on technology spending, if any?

SC: Broadband penetration is a key enabler to the development of economies and to make countries more competitive in this flat world.

RT: One of the exciting opportunities we’re presenting attendees at this year’s show is a fast way to find and network with companies they’re interested in, through ITEXPO DealCenter. What, specifically, is bringing you to ITEXPO (News - Alert) West 2009? What kinds of companies or professionals do you want to meet?

SC: I would want to meet with companies in the mobile VoIP domain and service providers who see wireless as a major growth area.

RT: What specific products or services do you intend to research or select?

SC: We would want to look at how the wireless growth around the world can aid the use of VoIP, how to manage the issue of multiple handset brands and operating systems in this space.
