SIP Trunking Takes Center Stage

Steven Johnson is President, Ingate Systems, Inc., a provider of SIP-based firewall and security solutions used by enterprises.
At the upcoming Internet Telephony Conference and EXPO (ITEXPO (News - Alert)) in Los Angeles CA, Johnson and his team will be hosting a free, three-day workshop focusing on SIP Trunking. Over the course of three days (September 16–18, 2008), attendees will learn about the important considerations in implementing SIP Trunking, including perspectives by the IP-PBX manufacturers and the service providers, as well as be a part of two live demonstrations of connecting a PBX to a service provider network right from the classroom.
Attendees can also earn a SIP Trunking Professional Certificate by participating in the Professional Development Program on the first day of the event.
I had the opportunity to catch up with Johnson in advance of the show.
RT: What has been your company’s biggest achievement in 2008 so far?
SJ: Ingate has seen a continuing growth in sales driven in large part by the growth in SIP Trunking adoption.
RT: What can we expect to see for from your company for the next 12 months?
SJ: Ingate continues to develop relationships with IP-PBX vendors and Internet Telephony (News - Alert) Service Providers. We are focusing on releasing new features that will enhance the product for installations at customer sites either as part of the service provider solution, or as a component recommended by the IP-PBX vendor. Over the next year both of these channels should demonstrate strong growth.
RT: How do you see the communications market evolving?
SJ: Unified Communications is definitely generating a lot of interest, and interoperability between all of the components of a unified communications implementation is very important. We believe that initiatives by the SIP Forum (News - Alert) will enable further standardization in the implementation of SIP Trunking and other services and that products like those offered by Ingate will play a large part in assuring the continued success of enterprise installations of many SIP based applications.
RT: What company made the biggest contribution to communications this year?
SJ: I believe that the SIP Forum, although not a “company” per se, has developed in the SIPConnect standard 1.0 a methodology for interfacing between IP-PBXs and ITSPs. This standardization work, or set of best practices, is being continued with plans for a Version 1.1 to be released by the end of 2008. This type of standardization is necessary to insure that SIP Trunking, and unified communications, will work seamlessly and be accepted as a viable replacement to the PSTN.
SJ: Google as a search engine gives unprecedented access to customers, vendors and partners alike to up to date information about products, trends and intelligence. In a way Google has replaced traditional methods of learning about new products and technologies. But as a business, Google has the opportunity to revolutionize communications of all sorts.
RT: How about Apple?
SJ: Apple is a great source of new, exciting and unique products. The iPhone is a prime example of form meeting function and surpassing the wildest expectations of the marketplace. And as a marketing company, they have certainly succeeded in getting the public’s mind share.
RT: What mobile phone(s) do you use?
SJ: I use an AT&T GSM phone, but it is time for an upgrade.
RT: Who will win in an Apple/RIM war?
SJ: I’d bet on Apple.
RT: What do you think the communications market might look like in five years?
SJ: Of one thing I am certain, it will look different than it does today. Undoubtedly SIP Trunking will have become a standard mode of communications for most business and probably most households. The participants in the market, I believe, will shrink both in the number of service providers and the number of equipment suppliers. This is natural in a new marketplace.
RT: What will attendees learn about in your session at ITEXPO this September?
SJ: Our sessions are focused on SIP Trunking. Over three days, attendees will learn about the important considerations in implementing SIP Trunking, including perspectives by the IP-PBX manufacturers and the service providers. The attendees will get a chance to see two live demonstrations of connecting a PBX to a service provider network from the conference room, and making a call to an audience participant within 20 minutes. On day two, we will focus on case studies and on a presentation from Dan York of the VoIP Security Alliance (News - Alert) on the subject of security for the enterprise VoIP network. And then on day three we will have a SIP Trunking Boot Camp to go deeper into the implementation of a SIP Trunking solution in an enterprise, including a detailed training session on the Ingate products.
RT: What type of attendees do you think should come to your session?
SJ: Resellers and end customers who are considering SIP trunking and want to learn from some of the leaders in the industry how to design and implement SIP in their company or for their customers.
RT: Why should customers choose your company’s solutions?
SJ: Ingate has focused on SIP and its many applications since 2001 and has what we consider to be the most robust enterprise edge device available to enable and control SIP for the enterprise. Our wide customer base and strong relationships with the major IP-PBX vendors make Ingate the leader in the field.
