Alcatel-Lucent's CDMA network Selected by China TelecomBy Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor China Telecom has selected Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) to upgrade its CDMA network in 56 cities across nine provinces, Alcatel-Lucent announced in a press release. This will help China Telecom to expand the capacity and coverage of its wireless network. The equipments provided by Alcatel-Lucent will include converged radio access network solution and its newly-designed, ultra-compact, indoor 9916 Macro Base Station. The base station’s green design reduces energy consumption by up to 24 percent, which is a weighted average of the expected OPEX (News - Alert) savings of the Alcatel-Lucent 9916, claims the company. With this, China Telecom can protect wireless service providers’ investments when transitioning to next-generation LTE (News - Alert) technology. The Alcatel-Lucent 9916 Macro Base Station is an ultra-compact, indoor macro base station designed to meet the needs of high-growth markets. It provides modular construction and reduces capital expenditures (CAPEX). “This contract further confirms Alcatel-Lucent’s leadership in the CDMA market – both in China and in the rest of the world. Alcatel-Lucent’s solution not only supports China Telecom’s daily business goals – but also helps it reduce the power consumption of its network, thus contributing to a ‘greener’ society,” said Romano Valussi, president of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and head of Alcatel-Lucent’s China regional business unit. To economically meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demands of 3G mobile services delivery, Alcatel-Lucent also provides an Ethernet backhaul capable RAN solution. The company is a provider of China Telecom’s CDMA network and has actively participated in its previous two expansion projects. With a market share of more than 40 percent, the company also leads in terms of worldwide CDMA revenues, states industry analyst firm Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro. Recently, the company celebrated a big win as reported in a RCR Wireless report. The company has been selected to provide mobile backhaul for AT&T’s LTE network. As part of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide IP/MPLS/Ethernet/Evolved Packet Core to AT&T (News - Alert). Alcatel-Lucent’s High Leverage Network (HLN) covers mobile backhaul, broadband access, IP transport and distributed service intelligence. It also leverages the company’s wireline, optical and wireless assets. Raju Shanbhag is a contributing editor for TMCnet. To read more of Raju’s articles, please visit his columnist page.
