Red Hat Intros Teiid Data Virtualization System Project

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Red Hat, a provider of open source solutions, has announced the launch of the Teiid data virtualization system project in the JBoss.org Community.

Touted as the first open source community project, Teiid aims to deliver Enterprise Information Integration (EII) with both relational and XML data virtualization.

“When Red Hat (News - Alert) acquired MetaMatrix in April 2007, we committed to releasing the data services technology in the open source community and Teiid is the result of that promise,” said Craig Muzilla, vice president of Red Hat’s middleware business.

He said that enterprises now have a choice between expensive, proprietary data services and an enterprise-class open source platform at a fraction of the cost.

Unlike other open source data integration technologies that center on physically moving or copying data to locations, Teiid focuses on data virtualization. Red Hat officials said that this enables real-time access to data across heterogeneous data sources without copying or moving the data from the systems of record.

Moreover, the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and Web Services interfaces of this latest launch are designed to provide simple integration with both custom and COTS applications.

Additionally, Teiid is expected to provide the backbone for future versions of the JBoss Enterprise Data Services Platform.

With Teiid, members of the open source middleware ecosystem such as developers, have a new tool to ease integration with existing systems and standards support. Officials said that data federation capabilities may be embedded into applications without deploying a second server runtime environment.

ISVs and system integrators grapple with how to unite data across their customers’ many and varied data silos. Teiid is expected to simplify this data integration task. In addition, enterprise architects may access the core of the JBoss Data Services Platform (currently MetaMatrix) with the community launch of Teiid.

The Teiid project joins a number of other Red Hat-sponsored open source virtualization projects, include the oVirt.org project.

Earlier this month, Red Hat announced that rednano.sg, Singapore’s first local search and directory engine, has developed a stable platform for its online search engine business using a combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform, including built-in virtualization, Red Hat Cluster Suite and Red Hat Global File System (GFS), and also Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite.
